Closing Bell: Weakness Prevails without direction (AMP, CSCO, C, PEIX, CRWN, SYMC)

Today might as well have just been called a nuisance of a trading day. Jobless claims fell by about 11,000, but failed to exude any optimism. Then two different Fed officials chimed in on the deflationary fear front. To top it off, the S&P charts are giving different reads near-term versus long-term.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 10,467.16 -30.72 (-0.29%)
S&P 500 1,101.53 -4.60 (-0.42%)
Nasdaq 2,251.69 -12.87 (-0.57%)

Kellogg Down After Quarterly Report -- No Need to Worry
Published on 2010-7-29 22:40:00

So Kellogg (K) is not the toast of Wall Street today. At the time of this writing, shares were off by close to 6%, coming in at a quote of $48.50. Are you kidding me? A defensive stock like this one is off by almost 6%? Yes, my friends, it happens. Makes you wonder what is truly defensive and what isn't, am I right?

Shareholders have no choice but to go along for the ride. Then again, they do have a choice. Perhaps they could add to their position on the dip. After all, is Kellogg through as a long-term idea?

Valero Energy: Stock's Lack of Progress Is a Concern
Published on 2010-7-29 22:00:00

The shares of independent refiner Valero Energy (VLO), first discussed here on April 20, 2009 at a price of $20.08, continue to frustrate investors.

Refinery margins, which were squeezed during 2008-2009, due to the loss of more than 8 million jobs from the U.S. economy -- many of those being vehicle owners -- have started to recover. Even so, the market has not worked this new reality into Valero's stock price yet.

Ray of Light: Risk Appetite Has Increased
Published on 2010-7-29 21:00:00

Experienced investors know that even the most-sobering economic reports can contain 'gems' or small-but-significant, positive data points.

The U.S. Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book report on the economy is a classic example. The Fed confirmed that the U.S. economic recovery had slowed in the second quarter, with regions reporting uneven levels of growth.

The gem? The recovery, although in low gear, nevertheless remains fast enough for commercial borrowers to service their debt, and this is helping to stabilize the commercial debt market.

Genzyme Lifted By Takeover Speculation
Published on 2010-7-29 20:30:00

Genzyme (GENZ - option chain) shares are rising today on a report in the Wall Street Journal which says that Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY) could make a formal takeover offer to GENZ's board that could be worth about $20 billion. SNY declined to comment on the report. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on GENZ.

GENZ opened this morning at $70.31. So far today the stock has hit a low of $69.97 and a high of $70.97. As of 11:55, GENZ is trading at $70.09 up $2.09 (3.1%). The chart for GENZ looks bullish and S&P gives GENZ a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

Stanley Works: Low-Profile Hardware Gem

Stanley Works (SWK) logoSince I first discussed Stanley Works (SWK) here on February 10, 2009, at a price of $32.48, the shares have pulled-back roughly in-sync with the Dow's recent retreat. But they have since found support near $50, and I obviously still like the shares. Here's why.

Look for experienced, battle-tested Stanley Works to post a nearly 100% revenue increase in 2010, mostly on the strength of its Black & Decker acquisition, but also as the tool sector benefits from strong growth in emerging markets. A factor that's up in the air? The status of the U.S. economic expansion in the second half of 2010.

American Axle Targeted by a Pre-earnings Straddle

auto manufacturingAmerican Axle & Manufacturing Holdings (AXL) is prepping for its turn in the earnings spotlight. The auto parts issue is slated to confess its second-quarter results ahead of Friday's opening bell, and at least one speculator is looking for a major post-event move from the shares. Bright and early Thursday morning, an ambivalent options trader opened an at-the-money straddle on AXL.

Specifically, the trader simultaneously purchased several matching blocks of August 9 puts and calls. With AXL trading just pennies above $9, both of these options are at the money. By scooping up equal numbers of puts and calls at the same strike, the trader is hoping to capitalize on a drastic move higher or lower from the security.

Newmont Mining Earnings Miss Estimates
Published on 2010-7-29 16:30:00

Newmont Mining (NEM), the world's largest gold producer, reported net income of $382 million or 77 cents a share, up from $162 million or 31 cents per share a year earlier. This was below analysts' estimates of 84 cents, according to Bloomberg. Sales rose 34% to $2.15 billion. Shares of Newmont fell 38 cents Wednesday to $55.40 per share.

Heavy rains in Indonesia were responsible for a shortfall at the Batu Hijau mine. Production there was down 6.8% to 82,000 ounces. This compares with 88,000 ounces during the first quarter. Gold output was also less than expected at Newmont's Boddington mine in Australia.

U.S. Economic Uncertainty Creates a Range-Bound Dow
Published on 2010-7-29 0:00:00

If you sense that the U.S. stock market recently seems to trade up one day on a good data point, then trade down the next, when a negative data point is released, you're not the only one.

Further, look for the Dow to remain range-bound, with rallies and pull-backs containing little conviction, until the U.S. economic outlook has been clarified.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke perhaps best summarized the U.S. economic outlook when he termed it "unusually uncertain." Don't misunderstand: The U.S. economy continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace in the second quarter, but conflicting data regarding what's next abounds.

Yesterday was a mixed day, and today was just a down day. Durable goods were a disappointment in negative territory. Earnings were mixed. The negative bias of the Fed's Beige Book coincides with the sell-off at 2:00 PM but this still just brings in the notion that there is going to be a slow recovery, rather than any massive double-dip recession.
